Miscellaneous

Here are some random items that just don't fit anywhere.

Wheelies

Being able to pull up the front tire can be helpful when trying to negotiate an obstacle such as a log or rock.  It's also just a lot of fun

Starting a Wheelie

  1. Get to 20-25MPH in 2nd gear

  2. Don't let off the gas

  3. Quickly pull the clutch in and let it out in one fluid motion.  You should only need to pull in the clutch a little bit and not all the way to the grip.

  4. Let off gas to level out or slightly feather rear brake

This is of course easier with lower gearing, lower tire pressure and bikes with performance upgrades.

Turning While Doing a Wheelie

Steer bike with the bottom of the front tire.

If you want to go right, turn the front wheel to the left and use the bottom of the front wheel to pull you to the side. ]

How to Kick Start a DR 650

Basic technique for cold start:

  1. Turn key ON

  2. Turn fuel petcock to ON

  3. Pull choke to full on (unless bike is already warm)

  4. Engage the decompression lever and release

  5. DO NOT TOUCH THROTTLE - engine will NOT start or cold idle with an open throttle

  6. kick through slowly until the decompression lever clicks up

  7. bring the kick start back to the top

  8. Commit to a big kick

  9. Repeat the decomp/kick series until it fires

  10. Let engine run on full choke until engine begins to rev way up at idle

Basic technique for warm start:

  1. Key ON

  2. Turn fuel petcock to ON

  3. Ensure choke is off

  4. Engage the decompression lever and release

  5. You may or may not need throttle - older bike like a little throttle if warm

  6. kick through slowly until the decompression lever clicks up

  7. bring the kick start back to the top

  8. Commit to a big kick

  9. Repeat the decomp/kick series until it fires

Advanced Technique:

  1. Turn fuel petcock to PRI (Prime)

  2. Pull the choke

  3. Ensure kill switch is OFF or Key is OFF

  4. Engage the decompression lever and HOLD IT

  5. Kick it 4 or 5 times

  6. Release the lever

  7. kick through slowly until the decompression lever clicks up

  8. Switch the kill switch and Key back to RUN

  9. DO NOT TOUCH THROTTLE - engine will NOT start or cold idle with an open throttle

  10. Commit to a big kick

  11. Repeat the decomp/kick series until it fires

  12. Turn fuel petcock to ON

  13. Let engine run on full choke until engine begins to rev way up at idle

Roll down a hill start:

  1. Set the decompressor

  2. full choke

  3. DO NOT TOUCH THROTTLE - engine will NOT start or cold idle with an open throttle

  4. 2nd gear

  5. Slowly release the clutch when you have some speed

  6. Coast to stop and let the bike warm up

Clearing a Flooded Engine

  1. Make sure that the overflow tube isn't full of fuel (after dumping bike)

  2. Key OFF

  3. hold the decompression lever in

  4. hold the throttle wide open to clear the passage

  5. kick kickstart several times

  6. release decompression lever and throttle

  7. Key ON try to start bike as you normally would

DR650 won't start after dumping bike

The carburetor overflow tube has a tendency to fill up with fuel if bike is dumped on right side.

Fix

Remove tube, add T fitting or reroute to allow to drain below the level of engine.

Grenading  Transmission

There is a potential significant problem with some 1998 and early 1999 DR650s prior to vin # X2100561.  These bikes had a solid starter idler gear that can break out of the gear bearing bosses when the engine kicked back during shutdown.  This will break out of the left case half, destroying it.  Should this catastrophic event occur, you will have a very costly repair on your hand.

If you have a 98-99 DR650 that hasn't been updated, you can switch to a 96-97 torque limiter gear that's designed to slip.  DR650s after vin # X2100561 went back to the pre-1998-1999 design.

Parts needed:

Parts cost around US$150.
