Suzuki DR650 Miscellaneous Page
Here are some random items that just don't fit anywhere.
Wheelies
Being able to pull up the front tire can be helpful when trying to negotiate an obstacle such as a log or rock. It's also just a lot of fun
Starting a Wheelie
Get to 20-25MPH in 2nd gear
Don't let off the gas
Quickly pull the clutch in and let it out in one fluid motion. You should only need to pull in the clutch a little bit and not all the way to the grip.
Let off gas to level out or slightly feather rear brake
This is of course easier with lower gearing, lower tire pressure and bikes with performance upgrades.
Turning While Doing a Wheelie
Steer bike with the bottom of the front tire.
If you want to go right, turn the front wheel to the left and use the bottom of the front wheel to pull you to the side. ]
How to Kick Start a DR 650
Basic technique for cold start:
Turn key ON
Turn fuel petcock to ON
Pull choke to full on (unless bike is already warm)
Engage the decompression lever and release
DO NOT TOUCH THROTTLE - engine will NOT start or cold idle with an open throttle
kick through slowly until the decompression lever clicks up
bring the kick start back to the top
Commit to a big kick
Repeat the decomp/kick series until it fires
Let engine run on full choke until engine begins to rev way up at idle
Basic technique for warm start:
Key ON
Turn fuel petcock to ON
Ensure choke is off
Engage the decompression lever and release
You may or may not need throttle - older bike like a little throttle if warm
kick through slowly until the decompression lever clicks up
bring the kick start back to the top
Commit to a big kick
Repeat the decomp/kick series until it fires
Advanced Technique:
Turn fuel petcock to PRI (Prime)
Pull the choke
Ensure kill switch is OFF or Key is OFF
Engage the decompression lever and HOLD IT
Kick it 4 or 5 times
Release the lever
kick through slowly until the decompression lever clicks up
Switch the kill switch and Key back to RUN
DO NOT TOUCH THROTTLE - engine will NOT start or cold idle with an open throttle
Commit to a big kick
Repeat the decomp/kick series until it fires
Turn fuel petcock to ON
Let engine run on full choke until engine begins to rev way up at idle
Roll down a hill start:
Set the decompressor
full choke
DO NOT TOUCH THROTTLE - engine will NOT start or cold idle with an open throttle
2nd gear
Slowly release the clutch when you have some speed
Coast to stop and let the bike warm up
Clearing a Flooded Engine
Make sure that the overflow tube isn't full of fuel (after dumping bike)
Key OFF
hold the decompression lever in
hold the throttle wide open to clear the passage
kick kickstart several times
release decompression lever and throttle
Key ON try to start bike as you normally would
DR650 won't start after dumping bike
The carburetor overflow tube has a tendency to fill up with fuel if bike is dumped on right side.
Fix
Remove tube, add T fitting or reroute to allow to drain below the level of engine.
Grenading Transmission
There is a potential significant problem with some 1998 and early 1999 DR650s prior to vin # X2100561. These bikes had a solid starter idler gear that can break out of the gear bearing bosses when the engine kicked back during shutdown. This will break out of the left case half, destroying it. Should this catastrophic event occur, you will have a very costly repair on your hand.
If you have a 98-99 DR650 that hasn't been updated, you can switch to a 96-97 torque limiter gear that's designed to slip. DR650s after vin # X2100561 went back to the pre-1998-1999 design.
