For trips and commuting, you will want a cargo storage option better than just your cargo pockets.

Luggage Racks

These can be simple to fabricate or purchased from a bike accessory retailer. They allow you to carry any number or cargo items.

Stock Pre 96 DR Carrier

If you have a pre 96 DR650 - it probably came with a nice little rack.

Racks have been made from bent strips of flat metal, drilled out plastic cutting boards, milk crates, cemented PVC pipe and welding bent tubing.

Hard Cases

Pelican Case on GS

These can be made from ammo cans (plastic or metal), large mess tins, waterproof Pelican Cases, or custom made from aluminum. These provide a bit more security than soft bags and tend to protect their contents better from the elements. These are really nice when your travels take you anywhere there are people.

Soft Luggage

Wolfman Tankbag

These come in many forms such as tank bags, saddle bags, dry bags, duffels that strap onto racks and even small inner tube bags that strap onto plastic fenders. These can be pretty affordable, easy make or modify and are light weight. They unfortunately don't offer much protection against a thief with a knife.

Rear Side Mounts/Protectors

For rear saddle bags, you will need to install a wheel/exhaust protector to prevent your bags from melting on your exhaust or swinging into your wheel, which can damage your bags or potentially get tangled up in your spokes, which can be quite dangerous. If you are using hard cases, then you will need some sort of frame to mount your cases unto. For hard cases, "pucks" are popular since you can easily remove hardcases without tools.

PVC Tubing

These are often strapped to recesses generally not utilized and can hold and protect tools, small spare parts and other repair items. These can be pretty durable, waterproof and give your bike that utilitarian look.
