The DR650 has a simple model history that dates back to 1990 when the first DR600 was converted to a DR650. It has evolved since and riders will find that the there are some variations in the different models, some minor and some significant.

VDS (Vehicle Descriptor Section):
In many European countries, a 17-character VIN is not required for motorcycles and a shorter VDS code is used as part of the identification code prior to 1996. Suzuki uses the following five character (alpha numeric) system:

Generally, an "A" is used for the
base model with non-restricted (full) power output. Other letters are used to identify new or special editions of the same model. There may be differences in fairings, handlebars, performance mods, etc.
The A version was used in many countries such as Australia, and the B version was used in Germany and later (1996) in Italy. |

The U-type variant Suzuki bikes (DR650s included) were/are available in the German and European market with some subtle differences including their own special carburetors with different needle jet, greater pilot screw set back and other mods that differ from the carbs used in other markets. These mods allow the DR650's full power to be limited to 20kW/27HP from 1990-1992 and to 25kW/34HP after 1993 for beginner motorcycle riders. Carb kits are also available with TÜV (Technischer Überwachungs-Vereinuse) certification to allow for reduced DR650 power output for beginner riders - so used bike buyer beware.

The DR650 has an interesting history if you are interested in DR650s.
1990 Suzuki year code: L
In the late 1980s, the DR600 was the largest dual sport bike offered by Suzuki. The Honda 650 Dominator entered the dual sport scene, making Suzuki's DR600 seem small in comparison. So in an effort to remain competitive in the larger engine displacement dual sport market, Suzuki moved ahead with plans to make a larger and updated dual sport bikes. The DR600 is replaced by the DR650 and the DR750 is replaced by the DR800.
1985 DR600S
In the 1990 model year, Suzuki offered the DR650 Dakar (also called the DR650R, DR650 Djebel and DR650S) and the DR650RS. Both bikes shared similar drivetrains and the biggest difference between the two models was the front fairing used on the RS compared the the more traditional dirt bike look with front mudguard on the Dakar (DR650R). The RS was also lighter, featuring a smaller exhaust system and other features.
DR800 Big
The engine used on the DR650 is basically the same one used on the DR600, but with a bigger bore and a larger stroke. Besides that, the frame and suspension on the new DR650 was upgraded, allowing for a more comfortable riding position that is better suited for both road and offroad riding.
Both the DR650 Dakar and the DR650RS featured a 21 liter fuel tank of and a good sized aluminum luggage carrier.

1991 Suzuki year code: M
In 1991, Suzuki introduced the DR650RSE with electric start and an automatic decompression system. This new model was 15 kg (33 lbs) heavier than the RS due to the addition of the electric starter, larger battery and more powerful stator able to produce 200W instead of 180W. The RSE also received a 5 mm (0.2 inches) shorter trail and wheelbase to compensate for the increase in sprung weight.

1992 Suzuki year code: N
In 1992, Suzuki trimmed the DR650 line. The fuel tank size was decreased to 17 liters from 21 liters and the aluminum rear carrier was replace with a smaller one. These and other changes tot he 1992 line allowed for a 8 kg (17,6 lbs) decrease in dry mass. The rear suspension was also improved as was the exhaust system, which was enlarged for better low-rev torque. The DR650 Djebel was renamed the DR650R.
From 1992 though the 1995 model years, the DR650 series changed very little. Most changes prior to 1996 were only cosmetic in nature.

In 1996, the DR650 models were completely revised. The new design is 25 kg (55 lbs) lighter than the 1995 DR650SE. This was done by lightening up the bike as a whole. The engine is more compact and put out less horsepower but the power band was lowered to deliver the more power at lower RPMs. This allowed for a smoother ride with less vibrations and you no longer had to keep the engine revving at 3,000 RPMs to keep it from stalling. Power was squeezed from the smaller engine by performing another upgrade on the exhaust system, increasing the bore by 5 mm (0.196 in) and shortening the stroke by 8 mm (0.315 in). Suzuki also cut weight by using only a single balance shaft compared to using two found on most single cylinder thumpers.
The front received a new hybrid-style 43mm KYB fork with gold anodized lower legs. The new DR650 also received a new oil cooler, a new electric starter system without a back-up kick lever, a narrower, thinner and less comfortable seat, and a much smaller fairing in the front without a windshield. The new steel fuel tank is smaller with a 13 liter (3.4 gallon) capacity and uses a vacuum switched gas petcock. The new large exhaust system is quiet and composed of stainless steel with an aluminum heat guard.
With the DR650's new weight loss, it received a smaller, 290mm (11.4 inch) floating front disc and a more compact twin-piston Nissin caliper in the front. The rear uses a solid-mounted 245mm rotor and a single-piston Nissin caliper.
The skid plate and rear luggage rack were removed from the new DR650E but these and a gel seat are available as options from Suzuki.
The frame is completely different than the pre '96 DR650s. The new frame is computer-designed incorporating thin-wall/large O.D. tubing forms and stamped gussets which can be easily identified on the side of the bike as the new DR650SE has squared tubes instead of the round tubes seen on the pre '96 frames. This new frame is both lighter and has 13 percent more torsional rigidity. A single downtube cradle controls an all new welded box-section aluminum swingarm which uses all new machined aluminum shock linkage. A Kayaba shock with a piggyback reservoir, adjustable preload and compression damping can be adjusted to allow for two different seat heights.
A kit is available with a shorter kickstand and relocates the shock links and fork internals to drop the seat height for short riders. This of course alters the dimensions of the bike. These are the affected dimensions:

In 1997, Suzuki offered the XF650 Freewind which shares the same mechanics as the DR650SE, but was designed more for street/touring use than offroad use. The Freewind had less ground clearance and a 19 inch front wheel instead of the 21 inch wheel used on the DR650SE. You could also lower the seat height of the Freewind to 30mm (1.2 inches). The Freewind remained more or less the same with only color changes until it was discontinued in 2004.

There were several reports of the solid starter idler installed in 1998 DR650SEs breaking through the left case half, causing significant damage and leaving the bike not drivable. After vin # X2100561 in early 1999, Suzuki switched back to using a clutch torque limiter starter idler assembly which eliminated this problem in subsequent years.

After many years (since the introduction of the 1996 model) of leaky paper cylinder base gaskets, in late 2003 Suzuki started using a steel laminated gasket. This had a has a small tab with a rivet in it on the front right corner of the engine below the oil cooler. Previous leaks ranged from minor weeping to more worrisome leaks that would require periodic oil topping.
